Aching Feet, Heat Exhaustion ... and every house in the ward leafletted
There's a team photo in someone's digital camera and as soon as they get home please PM or email someone on the site and we will get it uploaded.
Several carloads of activists gave up their Sunday morning, Sunday lunch and Sunday afternoon for the cause today. For, as stated on the website of Torfaen Council (that's a PDF doc by the way) there's an election for the Lowlands And Avondale Ward Community Council and as can be seen from the Notice Of Poll some two thousand seven hundred people will soon be given the choice of a Labour, Plaid, Independent or British National Party Candidate to represent them at this fundamental level of the democratic process.
And my aching feet will readily testify to the fact that there is not a letterbox in that ward that has not been given a leaflet introducing our candidate. Battle weary from the General Election we might be, but nonetheless we hit the streets to once again do our bit for the cause at the grass roots.
Now I had the "easy" job. In many streets my General Election Agent and other willing "runners" did most of the hard graft, the leg and stair work (thanks guys) taking the message to the letterboxes. I had the easy job. Decked out with a Party Rosette I quickly found a role in hailing the many passers by, the people out in their gardens on a glorious sunny morning, the people washing their cars or any of a dozen other "sunday jobs".
And I very quickly found every person I spoke to very interested.
I would greet them with a smile as I walked along the road, leaflet in hand. My first question was "did they know there was a local election next week". And NOT ONE OF THESE PEOPLE DID KNOW THAT. From there, the rosette did the job of making it obvious which party I was campaigning for, so all I had to say was "The British National Party Are Standing a Candidate in this Local Election, Would you like a leaflet introducing him and what he stands for".
And Do you know how many people refused me ? NONE.
All right, maybe this country has a population conditioned to feel that politeness and courtesy demands they do not refuse such a request. Maybe they will bin it or compost it. Maybe I'm wasting my time. But maybe not. Maybe people do want to see what we have to say. Maybe they will believe it. Maybe they will not. Who knows.
All I do know for certain is I have spoken to a couple of dozen people all of whom had no idea Labour were seeking to retain power at the local level and all of whom told me they were pleased to see we were standing and that they looked forward to voting for us.
Maybe they say that to all the leafletters and canvassers. I would not blame any of them if they did. And maybe the only honest man we found all day was the one who told one of my fellow activists "No Thanks Mate You're All The Same and I Cant Be Bothered With Any Of You"
But he was one man in a ward of two thousand seven hundred.
Maybe we will get a chance to prove we're not all In It For The Money, Power and Glory like the Labour, Tory and Lib Dems. Maybe we'll get a chance to go back in a few years and ask that chap what he thinks now he's had a BNP man working for the community.
Only time will tell. But if our man does get in he owes me a beer and an expense payment for a quarter of an inch of shoe leather.
