On the 8pm.news on Arte/info(french/german channel) they reported that:-

All along the Canal St.Martin in Paris, every evening several hundred asylum seekers gather. They are for the most part Afghans on route for Calais/UK.

They are waiting there for several coaches to arrive which will take 300 lucky ones to a disused bakery where they are fed & housed for the night. Things are very tense and a large police presence is required as violence and fighting regularly break out as there are two to three times the numbers requiring lodging for the night, and the weather is turning colder, with many of them inappropriately dressed for cold nights.

Hundreds more fortunate are living in tents around the area of the Gare du Nord.

On Fr2 they reported on the Greek general election today where the principal concern of voters was the ever increasing flow of illegal immigrants, who have been arriving by the boatload mainly from Turkey.

The coastguards report that they are overwhelmed and unable to cope with the thousands that are arriving. The immigrants, who are mainly Afghans, are being initially held in deporable conditions in a holding centre, designed for 300, although at present there are closer to 900.

The Greek authorities hold them for a short period of time and then quietly release them to continue their onward journey. In the last year it is reported around 140,000 have arrived in Greece, and the government has said that other EU countries must share the burden.
