Ganesh, the "God of Beginnings And Obstacles".

It seems that not a day goes by without some follower of the cult of the dead paedophile popping up and claiming to be offended by some aspect of ordinary Brits going about their ordinary lives but this morning in the spirit of multiculturalism I thought I would bring you a story that broke a few months back that shows others can get just as worked up. An Indian artist in Goa has received death threats for portyaying the Hindu God "Ganesh" in "unusual poses".

Subodh Kerkar, 49, said extremists had threatened to chop off his fingers for producing the sketches, which also show the elephant-headed god performing a Maori dance, walking naked carrying a garden rake, and in the pose of Auguste Rodin’s The Thinker. Ganesh, widely revered in India as the “Lord of Beginnings and Obstacles”, is usually depicted sitting with a broken tusk in one hand and a sweet delicacy in the other. Mr Kerkar’s unorthodox drawings are part of a new exhibition in the former Portuguese colony of Goa.

"I have been receiving phone calls which threaten me with dire consequences. They told me that they will chop off my fingers for indulging in such acts,” he said. The artist added that the threats began when Sanatan Sanstha, a hard-line group which presents Hinduism as a form of science, told Hindus to call him and “express their anguish” at the images. Two other groups then filed complaints with the police, alleging that the artworks hurt religious feelings.

One, the extremist organisation Hindu Janagruti Samiti (HJS), called for demonstrations at the exhibition venue. “We intend to have peaceful protests, but we are not responsible for any law and order problem if it arises,” said Jayesg Thali, an HJS convener.

Goa state police confirmed they received two complaints and have told Kerkar to “desist from any activity which will hurt religious feelings”. But the artist, who says he is a devotee of Ganesha, insisted he meant no offence by his drawings. “They are an expression of my creativity,” he said.

Yet another example of freedom of expression being suppressed by an extremist religious organisation rousing a rabble to attend a "peaceful protest" at which they refuse to take responsibility for any violence that the people they have whipped up into a frenzy commit.

Sound familiar ? It bloody wel does to me.
